There has been a long-standing dispute between Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema over the income from the Rings-trilogy. Earlier this year news came that there was no chance New Line would do business with Peter Jackson again.
Despite this, New Line and Peter Jackson have put their differences behind them, and Peter Jackson has signed a deal to produce not one, but two films based on JRR Tolkien's "The Hobbit". A director for the films has yet to be named.
Like the Rings-trilogy, the two Hobbit films will be filmed simultaneously, with their release planned for 2010 and 2011.

Filming has actually started for this movie (in two parts). Production is expected to take two years, so maybe Xmas 2012?
