I effing HATE two-factor authentication |

I know it seems like a pain in the ass, but it's really quite easy. It's easy to set up, and you only need the two-factor passcode ONE time on your own computer. After entering the passcode, the app you're logging into (Facebook, GMail, etc.) will prompt you if you trust this computer. If it's your own, then you select Yes, and you'll never have to worry about the two-factor again. EVEN IF you log out of the app, when you log in (on the trusted computer) you won't need the two-factor passcode.
This means that it is only when you log in at other people's computers that you will have to worry about the passcode. Which is sent to your phone as an SMS or to the Facebook app, or Google Authenticator app or Authy app, whichever you choose.
One of the benefits, of course, is that you don't have to worry as much about anyone getting your passwords, or maybe your friends computer has a keylogger, or whatever. It doesn't matter, as they still can't log on without also having the two-factor passcode. |

Also, remember that you can set Facebook to give you a notification whenever someone logs into your account from a non-trusted computer/device, and you can also see which computers/devices are currently logged on, and you can remotely log them off, if you see something suspicious. This is also true for your Google account and others. |

It does not just seem to be a pain in the ass, it IS a pain in the ass and completely unneccessary in most instances. Besides, the sms feature does not work here. I have waited days for a sms with such a validation passcode, until I simply dropped the account and made one that does not require such nonsense. For my bank account, yes, I can understand the added security feature (albeit I also detest that extra waiting and retrying several times to get it to work) since it is a direct-access to my finances, but for a simple e-mail or effing facebook, it is just paranoid rubbish. |

I think two-factor authentification generally works great. I've had to use it a few times for my microsoft account, google account etc. as well as assisting colleagues with such accounts. I don't think I've ever had to wait more than about 20 seconds for the sms to arrive.
The great thing about the two-step authentification system is, that it allows you to prove your identity and thus access a service - even when you can't remember the last 3 passwords you've used.
However...
It's been more than a year since I used an app for "netbankin," but that's been my only experience of 2-factor authentification being unstable or annoying - i.e. often having to wait a couple of minutes for the sms. For netbankin I've experienced the sms arriving 14 hours later or not at all. |

Most two-factor authentications (not sure about netbankin...) provide the ability to use a passcode app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator or Authy. For Facebook the code can be delivered in the Facebook phone app (or the previously mentioned apps). That way there's no waiting for an SMS; the code is instantly available. |

I use Google authenticator sometimes, it Works like a charm. It even comes as a plug-in for Google Chrome, so you don't need to fiddle with your phone if you use a computer. |
