I have read a few of the books from Star Wars' extended universe. I think Luke is talking ... as an uncle, to Leai and Han's child (ren)

When I wrote the comment above, I thought the film was set immediately after or a few years after Return of the Jedi.
I have now heard/read that it is set about 30 years after.
That means that it does open up to the possibility of nieces/nephews. I remember some cool stuff with Jacen and Jaina from the books - but I think they've announced that they are not going to use material from them.
