Smartphones are breakable they have glass screens. This is pointless, random at best.
Vuzman on September 25 2012 15:57:21
Maybe I'm clumsy, but I tend to drop my phone every once in a while. All my phones have been pretty banged up by the time they were replaced. I expect a phone to be able to handle a couple accidents, especially since I refuse to put a protective cover on it.

I realize that smartphones are more vulnerable than the old phones, but my iPhone 4 is actually the phone that has proven to be the best at taking my treatment. My two Motorolas were clamshell-phones, which proved to be a fatal design flaw. My two SonyEricssons had movable sliders to cover the camera, also fatal. My three Nokia candy bars fared better, but the 3310 had less features than a toilet paper roll, the 3510i was slower than paint, and the 5140 was stupid. They were all quickly replaced, and Nokia joined Mars in my book of stuff I will never buy again. Actually, the 5140, supposedly made for rough handling, was the one that fared the worst. My iPhone 3G was amazingly scratch-less on retirement, but the plastic back didn't look too nice.

I digress, but maybe more drop-tests will make it seem less random? Here's a few: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

I just like how, in the original post, the guy *really* wanted the iPhone 5 to fail...
OKJones on September 25 2012 21:22:50
Well you can almost pick which phone you want to fail on youtube, it's hardly scientific but maybe the S3 has a tendency to shatter, I don't know.

My old HTC Desire went to the floor a hundred times, only scratches in the plastic and some in the screen, until it finally died when i dropped it on some concrete tiles. The screen was intact though. My Galaxy S2 has been dropped about 4-5 times already, some scratches to the plastic.

Here we have a different outcome.

I just don't understand how you can be so interested in something this trivial.
Spiff on September 26 2012 12:50:55
if you want a real test on a phone, give to a bricklayer for half a year, and you will get it back BROKEN. That´s just how it issmiley
Vuzman on September 26 2012 16:42:32
@Torellion, well, we can't all walk around and ponder the shortcomings of the Copenhagen Interpretation all day like you do, because, of course, you never bother your precious faculties with anything trivial, right...?

That was rheto-rhetorical, btw.

But, in fact, I don't think it is trivial. I use my phone all day, every day, and it costs a lot of money, so I kinda wanna make sure I get the best one. Smartphones also happen to lie at the intersection of the two fields I have worked in professionally - software development and telecommunications - and are also relevant to several other fields I take an interest in, like industrial design and UI/UX. So excuuuse me for meddling with such earthly affairs.

Also, I thought the video could be interesting (for anyone considering buying a new phone) and funny (for someone who thinks the Apple/Android fanboys are funny).

@Spiff: Don't blame your clumsiness on your work...smiley
Jogvanth on September 27 2012 19:42:59
I agree with OKJones. My Desire has been dropped countless times over the past 2 years and even kicked a few times and it only seems to bruise a bit but keeps on working fine. Mine still doesn't have any scratches on the screen even.

@Vuzman: What's up with Mars?
OKJones on September 27 2012 20:14:18
@Jogvanth: But you had some kind of cover, right? I didn't.
Norlander on September 27 2012 21:16:14
@Vuzman: What's up with Mars?

They had the commercial in Havnar Bio with the Mars Rover... vuzman made a promise to himself that if they showed it one more time he'd never buy a mars bar again; they did and then he did. That's 16 years ago... taking a stand against the Man!... or something smiley
