Poor kids are confused, some maybe even scared. Some are trying to come to terms with life's unfairness. They'll grow up and struggle with these beliefs, and either go through a rough awakening or live their life in denial.
When I read it I didn't laugh, it just made me sad and lose my faith in humanity. Not that I had any left, but you know, it's just a figure of speech.
