I like that he will reveal his trick the next week |
on September 10 2009 15:23:57
He's not allowed to reveal the lottery numbers before the BBC does?
Bullshit. He obviously can't reveal them before they are drawn, he can only venture a guess, and that's not illegal.
I doubt there are laws barring time travelers and psychics from revealing the Lotto numbers |
on September 10 2009 21:20:06
Of course there are! Revealing the numbers beforehand would be a clear breach of the Prime Directive.
I know how he does this trick btw, but the intergalactic mentalist and timetravelers guild has sealed my lips. |
on September 11 2009 01:14:08
@Vuzman: I think you're missing the point. He has publicized this as a great misdirection and will even reveal the trick a week from now, so calling it bullshit is well... bullshit.
@Grizlas: Just write it down and then reveal your prediction when he has revealed his trick next week, you know, like he does |
on September 11 2009 18:23:42
@norlander: ok then. I'll go back in my own time and predict the numbers. But only this once! |
on September 12 2009 01:04:23
@Norlander: Yes it is obviously a trick, and I'm not calling him out for that. I'm just sayin it's not very impressive, to show the numbers after they're drawn, and the misdirection is lame. Just sayin' |

Hahaha! I'd like to see someone proposing such a law! |
on September 14 2009 18:03:05
His explanation of the whole thing is now out. I can't see it from here, but I gather that some vids about it can be found here:
http://thedrilldown.com/2009/09/12/how-to-accurately-predict-the-lottery-on-live-tv/
and that his explanation involves 20 people a pure heart and long division? Thats the part about Derren that used to ick me, but the more I think about it, the more I like it becuase it brings much needed attention to the fact that people, apparently, seem to accept his bogus explanations without question. |

He supposably had 24 people do 'automatic writing', i.e. where they just write numbers without thinking... and then he averaged them out somehow and they became the winning numbers. Yaha. Then he comes with even more misdirection where he says that he definitely didn't rig the official lottery by switching the balls *wink*wink*....
In other news, YouTube is filled with videos explaining how he did this trick with a simple split screen. It even seems like the guy who put the balls on the rack while the numbers were being drawn made a little mistake, and placed one of the balls slightly differently than the original balls. Then when the split screen is removed, one of the balls seems to move a little bit up.
Again, always be wary of a psychic who claims to see the future, but won't tell you until after it has happened... |

I'd like to take this oppurtunity to remind you of his "red BMX bike", where his explanation involved the use of NLP |
on September 18 2009 08:17:44
It did involve NLP... and btw, so did this trick. NLP is not the trick itself, however.... it's just misdirection.
The red BMX is still pretty impressive (AFAICR), but I am assuming that the celeb guy is not in on it, and is being honest. |
on September 18 2009 13:27:32
I'd say the red bmx trick didnt involve the slightest little tiny sliver of NLP
Here's how I think the bmx trick was done:
1. get simon pegg to write something on a piece of paper to keep in his wallet and promise not to look at it for 2 weeks.
2. during those two weeks, steal his wallet and replace his wish (red bmx bike) with something else plausible, i.e. not too absurd, like a leather jacket.
3. Add misdirection; - pretend that you are programming Simon Pegg to want a bike using NLP techniques when he actually wanted one all along. |
on September 20 2009 01:00:16
Then it did involve NLP.... as misdirection, like I said. |
on September 20 2009 13:17:09
Ah, you mean like voodoo involves the use of magic!
We once argued about the validity of NLP as I recall - not about its existence but wether or not it was bullshit. At that time you argued that NLP was more than just magic - that it was something that actually worked. You change your mind on that?
Not saying that Derren Browns usage of NLP as misdirection proves NLP to be bullshit.. But then again..it doesn't help |

Ok, let's get a few things straight first: DB claims that he can practically brainwash people with NLP to do what he says in a way that seems more powerful than hypnosis. This seems to be what you think NLP is. But what DB says NLP is is not what NLP is, and not how it works.
DB does use some NLP techniques in his tricks, and sometimes it is overt and sometimes it is covert. When it is overt, he is telling you how he made X do Y using NLP. In this instance, he is doing some trick, and telling you he's using NLP as a misdirection to get you away from seeing/thinking what the real trick is. When it is covert, he's using NLP as a rhetorical tool to sound more convincing or genuine, and again, to get you to focus on something as a misdirect. |
