Question to some of you more steeped in musical theory from someone who is somewhat tone-deaf.
Was listening to some Lynyrd Skynrd and then Scorpions in quick succession, and somehow the guitar opening to 'Simple Man' and 'Always Somewhere' sounds like the same song to me, why is that? Is it the similar melody, chord progression or?

The intro guitar picking is somewhat the same. The chord progressions for simple man is C G AM, and for Always Somwhere C G F E AM where F and E are very brief and hence you probably hear it as C G AM. Although it's not in the same key.

To me the melody or rhythm (unsure which one, maybe both) is also the same for the opening guitar, and have listened to it a few times, those extra chords might well not be there, hear them now (I think) when I am trying to hear them

Playing A and B notes as a lead-in to the C chord is a natural progression that you will find in a ton of songs (Stairway to Heaven and Á ferð til dreymaland, off the top of my head), and the chord progression is fairly standard as well, although the Scorions has those extra chords to mix it up. Maybe Scorpions plagiarized the LS song, consciously or unconsciously, but I wouldn't be surprised if they just both came up with something so similar each on their own. The guitars having almost the sam sound and echo/reverb/whatever also increases the similarity.

Yeah there are a lot of songs that sound the same, but I understood that most of those where due to both songwriters ripping the melody from some classical piece that was out of copyright. That video has some good examples where that is not the case for the rip-off.
The Lynard/Scorpions one just surprised me, I guess I never really put the two next to each other in a playthrough before, but suddenly I was just thinking "damn this intro sounds exactly like the other one".
