That Dr Dre thing is great. Although I don't mind the Black-Eyed Peas, I think pretty much any song where Fergie has a major role sucks. I don't think Alanis manages to make it interesting though - just more boring and depressing.
I always thought "Hey Yah" was allright - very strong and unusual verse, and this version is fine. I don't remember the DramaRama song.
I came by a fantastic cover the other day (on cd). It was TOOL doing a cover of Paul McCartney's "Silly Lovesongs" Check it out, if you find it somewhere.

Pretty good I just have this thing when people make covers without adding somesort of twist. But then again not adding anything has made some hits Mr. Tambourine man, knockin' on heaven's door.
Take Garage Inc. its all covers and some have just been added the metal part but they are all great.
How to rape a song: Boy/Girl bands cover Pink Floyd, Billy Joel and AC/DC
How to not rape a song: Solid musicians add some of their magic say Pink Floyd made a cover of some The Doors song I'm sure it would be great. Pantera's cover of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan".

Yeah, that was amazing. It intrigued me quite a bit that both Magni and Storm Large seem far more talented then your average reality song show contestant. So when to check out the Rockstar Supernova (season two of the Rockstar show) to figure out how come they didn't win.
Found these two videos of the winner Lukas Rossi. First one is the song he overcomes the field in mid season with his preformance of Creep by Radiohead.
This second one is his winning song on the final night - Headspin which is his original work.
This guy was awesome too. Should download this show just to enjoy the great music.

His creep version is ok'ish until he "lets go" as Jason said, thats where he's good. Livin' on a prayer that was just poor. Maybe this guy will fit perfect in some band where mumbeling does it.

Hehehe yeah. Well I actually came to think about somebody else who merits his on whole thread, but who mostly sings cover versions in the way that you described (by twisting it into something new): Johnny Cash.

Johnny Cash just nails it with Hurt, although the video doesn't seem to work.
I have seen the supernova rock star show, and through out the most of the show, Lukas Rossi seems to growl or mumble most of the time, he rarely seems to open his mouth, and it doesn't sound like singing. I hated him.
The funny thing about the show was that the house band was a lot better and more talented than Supernova.

You just need to doubleclick on the Johnny Cash Video. Some offical work on Youtube doesn't allow embedding (they want to keep track of how many view it I guess).
