To be honest I don't know if St. Anger sucks. I managed to listen through the album once when it came out. The drum sound is horrible, that snare in particular. I'm not listening to it again.

To paraphrase what he said in the review, St. Anger is the Phantom Menace of the Metallica Discography, and the snare is Jar Jar. Does the snare suck? Yes absolutely, but its not the sole reason why St. Anger sucks. Just like TPM sucks, and would still do so even if Jar Jar was a Sith Lord playing drunken master or just totally removed and forgotten.
